Why This Orchid Is Rare
Native to the Indonesian islands of Ambon, Seram and neighbouring Maluku Islands, Phalaenopsis amboinensis is a true botanical species that grows naturally as an epiphyte in warm tropical forests.
The var. flava form is particularly desirable because of its vibrant yellow pigmentation, which is much rarer than the standard form. The 'Sun × Lemon' cross has been selected for its exceptionally bright colouring, bold striping and excellent flower shape.
Collectors also value this species because it passes on its fragrance, sequential blooming habit and vivid yellow tones to many modern breeding lines.
Care Guide
Phalaenopsis amboinensis enjoys warmer conditions than many standard Phalaenopsis hybrids.
Place in bright filtered light with good air movement and avoid harsh afternoon sun. Maintain warm temperatures throughout the year and moderate to high humidity where possible. Water thoroughly when the roots become silvery, ensuring excellent drainage.
Feed every 2–3 weeks with orchid fertiliser during active growth. Avoid cutting old flower spikes unless they dry naturally, as this species often continues flowering from the same spike for many months.
