Why This Orchid Is Rare
Phalaenopsis cornu-cervi is one of the oldest known Phalaenopsis species and grows naturally throughout Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Borneo, Sumatra and the Philippines, where it inhabits warm, humid forests.
The Red Form is especially sought after because of its rich burgundy flowers, which are considerably less common than the standard yellow and spotted forms found in nature.
Collectors value this species for:
- Its exceptionally long flowering period.
- Flowers that continue to emerge from the same spike year after year.
- Compact growth habit.
- Glossy, wax-like flowers that last for weeks.
- Its importance in breeding many modern novelty and sequential-blooming hybrids.
Care Guide
Phalaenopsis cornu-cervi enjoys warmer conditions than most supermarket Phalaenopsis.
Provide bright filtered light with gentle morning sunshine if possible. Keep temperatures consistently warm and maintain moderate to high humidity with good airflow.
Water thoroughly when the roots become silvery, ensuring excellent drainage. Feed every 2–3 weeks during active growth using a balanced orchid fertiliser.
Do not remove green flower spikes. This species naturally continues producing new flowers from existing spikes, often for several years.
